There’s something special about this time of year at Pastoral Lane. The arrival of the autumn rain break has brought with it a welcome sense of renewal, energy, and optimism across the property.
After a dry spell, March delivered just over 100 millimetres of rain — and what a difference it has made. Almost overnight, the landscape transformed. A thick green tinge now stretches across the paddocks, with pastures responding beautifully and plants thriving with the moisture they’ve been waiting for.
It’s always remarkable how quickly nature responds when the rain arrives. The air feels fresher, the soil smells alive, and everywhere you look there are signs of growth and activity.
Everything is humming at Pastoral Lane.
The bees have been busy taking full advantage of the fresh flowering and improved conditions, working steadily throughout the day. Their activity is a sure sign that the ecosystem is thriving and the season ahead holds promise.
The hens are also enjoying the change. With fresh pasture underfoot and cooler conditions, they’ve settled into a strong rhythm and are laying a great number of eggs each day. It’s one of those times where everything feels balanced — healthy animals, good feed, and steady production.
Another exciting milestone for the season is the joining of the rams with the Wiltipoll ewes. This always marks an important turning point in the farming calendar. With the rams recently introduced, we’re now looking ahead to a June/July lambing season — something we eagerly anticipate each year. There’s nothing quite like seeing lambs bouncing across green paddocks in the middle of winter.
Despite the shorter days and cooler mornings, there’s an unmistakable sense of spring-like energy in the air. Growth is everywhere, optimism is high, and the farm feels alive with opportunity.
These autumn rains don’t just bring moisture — they bring momentum. Pastures strengthen, animals thrive, and the foundations are laid for the months ahead.
