Life on Pastoral Lane: Standing Strong Through Smoke and Summer Heat
Life on a farm near Albury isn’t always the postcard version people imagine. Some summers arrive carrying smoke-filled skies, relentless heatwaves, and the ever-present threat of bushfires. These are the seasons that test resolve, routine, and resilience—and remind us just how important it is to keep your head up and look for the positives, even when the air is thick and the days feel endless.
The smoke settles in quietly at first, dulling the horizon and bringing with it a constant sense of unease. Heatwaves follow close behind, stretching paddocks thin and pushing both people and animals to their limits. During these times, farming becomes less about productivity and more about protection—of livestock, land, and family.
Summer demanded more from us than ever before. Regular water drop-offs and cartage became essential just to keep stock alive. Troughs were checked and rechecked, hoses moved, tanks monitored closely. Phones were rarely far from reach, with fire danger apps refreshed constantly, alert for any change in conditions that could turn a hot day into a dangerous one.
Despite the pressure, the daily care never stopped. Sheep were monitored closely, fed and watered through the heat. Chickens still needed fresh water and feed, bees required careful attention during extreme temperatures, and the dogs stayed close—faithful shadows through long, exhausting days. Every task carried extra weight, but also extra purpose.
These summers, harsh as they were, strengthened our family unit in ways we didn’t expect. We learned to lean on each other, to share the load, and to find moments of gratitude among the stress—an evening breeze, a cooler morning, livestock safe at the end of another tough day.
There is never a dull moment on Pastoral Lane, and no two days are ever the same. Even in the smoke, drought, and heat, we keep going—adapting, caring, and holding onto hope. It’s not always easy, but it is honest, grounding, and deeply meaningful. This is farm life as it truly is: challenging, unpredictable, and bound together by resilience and heart.
